Who is Michael Maury
Michael Maury, a native of Nantucket, MA, has been a lover of music since he first plunked out, by ear, "Sesame Street" on a kid piano in Macy's toy department at the tender age of 5. His love of vocal music became evident in high school where he started singing on stage with the all male a cappella group, "The Naturals". Soon, after his beginnings in this group, he would start arranging music.
During his last two high school summers on Nantucket, Michael had the wonderful opportunity to sing in the island's popular barbershop quartet, "Willy and the Wailers". Through this great experience, Michael learned the intricacies of dissonant harmonies and their wonderful "barbershop" resolutions.
As his love for music expanded, so did his appreciation for the "A Cappella" sound. While his brother studied at Tufts University, Michael was enthralled with the college's a cappella group "The Beelzebubs" and their unique sound. He was amazed with the idea of performing pop hits with nothing more than the human voice. He began to listen to such collegiate groups as the Amherst Zumbeyes, The Skidmore Bandersnatchers, and summer groups like "The Vineyard Sound" of Martha's Vineyard. Michael soon began dreaming of his a cappella future at a great music college with a top notch group.
Unfortunately for Michael, Ithaca College, his school of choice, did not have a group; however, they did have fabulous musicians. Michael vowed that he didn't want to see such talent go to waste and he would make sure that a collegiate all male a cappella group would not only be formed under his tenure at Ithaca College, but that a foundation would be created to help it last for years to come. With the help of some musically gifted friends, Michael saw to it that the dream became reality. He helped form "Ithacappella" which still performs today. They have become an award winning ensemble with a great following.
During his summers between the college school years, Michael kept it going in the a cappella world while singing with Nantucket's own "The Cobbletones". While in this group, he arranged, conducted, and performed to his heart's content while appreciative tourists lined the streets in front of their Zero Main Street stage.
Since graduating Ithaca College and leaving Nantucket, Michael has performed on the musical theatre stage in such shows as "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown", "A Chorus Line", "Kismet", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", as well as countless others. He continues to work as an actor in Hollywood where he's had success in over 5 different national commercials as well as TV appearances on such hit shows like "That 70's Show" and "Heroes". After a brief hiatus from the musical world he is happy to say that he's back! His most recent project involves the 5 man A Cappella group "Evolution". They can be seen down in Santa Monica at the 3rd Street Promenade or on Saturday nights at Downtown LA's hot spot "Club 740" where they serenade guests upon entrance to the club. While arranging for "Evolution", Michael was encouraged by one of his fellow singers to spread his arrangements to a wider audience.
